This Thursdayโs Roll-Up brings a change of format as we take on Greensomes stroke play โ a game of teamwork, sound judgement and learning when a sympathetic silence is better than a swing tip.

Partners will be chosen by a random draw and max individual playing handicap is 28, so thereโs no carefully recruiting someone to compensate for your own golfing shortcomings. Youโll simply have to discover those of your allotted partner as the round unfolds.
Both partners tee off, you choose which ball to play, then take alternate shots until itโs in the hole. Simple enough, although choosing between two balls can occasionally feel like deciding which of two repair bills youโd rather pay.
Each player must contribute at least four selected tee shots, so keep count as you go. Nobody wants to reach the closing holes and discover that the teamโs entire strategy now depends on the partner who has spent the morning saying, โYouโd better use yours.โ
And remember, this is stroke play. Every stroke counts, so the familiar Stableford consolation of picking up and announcing โnothing for meโ wonโt be available. On the plus side, youโll have someone to share the triumphs with โ and someone standing beside you who knows exactly how the less memorable holes unfolded.
Away from Thursdayโs partnership negotiations, donโt forget to enter the clubโs Saints vs Pompey event this Saturday. Thereโs another opportunity for friendly rivalry, questionable sporting loyalties and some excellent clubhouse discussion afterwards.

Finally, keep an eye out for the Ghost and Ghoulies call-up, coming soon. Something suitably seasonal is heading our way, although Thursdayโs alternate-shot format may provide a few early rehearsals for looking horrified.

See you on Thursday โ and remember, โWeโre still in thisโ is usually more helpful than โWhat did you do that for?โ
