The dust has settled, the scores have been checked (and checked again), and the podium places are finally decided. Both the Senior Captain’s Cup and the Eclectic have reached their conclusions, bringing the curtain down on two closely fought competitions and giving the handicap calculators a well-earned rest. Some will be polishing their trophies, others nursing bruised pride, and a few still wondering how on earth that missed two-footer back in June managed to haunt them all the way into October.

So, this Thursday, it’s back to a good old-fashioned Seniors Roll-Up. No complicated calculations, no frantic checking of league tables and no wondering what might have been. Just 18 holes of golf, the usual friendly rivalry and a Nearest the Pin competition on the 11th. A chance to show off those pin-seeking iron shots, although those employing the tried-and-tested Sham City 114 defence may already be preparing their explanations. And judging by the latest Saints–Pompey encounter, Beano is already giving a masterclass in creative excuses. At least on the golf course you can blame the wind, the greens or a dodgy bounce!
