What a day! The wind howled like a banshee, the fairways were crawling with all manner of ghosts, ghouls and suspicious-looking characters, and Boundary Lakes had rarely seen such a wonderfully frightening collection of golfers. The Ghosts v Ghoulies Halloween Challenge had arrived, and what an absolute cracker it turned out to be!
Bringing together the Seniors and Ladies for six mixed-team matches, the competition was played in tremendous spirits โ some of them possibly supernatural. The fancy dress was magnificent, the enthusiasm infectious and the wind seemingly determined to send half the costumes into the next county. Quite how everyone managed to play golf in those conditions, let alone dressed like the cast of a horror film, remains one of the day’s great mysteries.
But beneath the wigs, masks and questionable disguises, there was some serious competition taking place. With live scoring and a leaderboard keeping everyone glued to the action, the drama built beautifully as the results started rolling in. Neither side could quite shake off the other, and with everything resting on the final match, the tension was positively spine-tingling. One last result, one final update and there it was โ Ghosts 3, Ghoulies 3! A dead heat. On Halloween. You really couldn’t make it up!
And if the golf was entertaining, the clubhouse celebrations were every bit as good. The Ladies produced a glorious spread of homemade cakes, proving once again that the quickest route to a golfer’s heart isn’t necessarily through the fairway. The raffle was outstanding too, helping raise a fantastic ยฃ290 for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that means a great deal to many of our members. A wonderful result and something everyone involved can be genuinely proud of.
A huge thank you to Matt and Julie for pulling together such a brilliant occasion, to all the Ladies for their generosity with the cakes and raffle, and to every player who embraced the fancy dress, battled the elements and helped make the day such a success. Events like this are what club golf is all about โ bringing people together, sharing a few laughs and creating memories that last considerably longer than the scorecards.
Six matches, six points shared, ยฃ290 raised and enough cake to keep a small village going until Christmas. The Ghosts and Ghoulies may have finished all square, but Boundary Lakes was the runaway winner.
And as for next year’s rematch? Bring it on. Just perhaps with a little less wind โ we’ve had quite enough of the howling, thank you very much!
