Outstanding golf, a lesson worth its weight in gold, and one man threatening to bankrupt the Twos fund!
Another Thursday at Boundary Lakes, another Roll-Up, and another afternoon of impressive scoring, questionable financial arrangements and a few golfers making rather more money than they probably admitted when they got home.
The headline act was undoubtedly Dave Carey, who left the clubhouse considerably better off than when he arrived. Not content with knocking in one two, Dave helped himself to three of them, before casually adding Nearest the Pin on the 11th to his collection. It was the golfing equivalent of winning the lottery and then finding a twenty-pound note in the car park. Mark Hannah, Doug Watson and Pete Scowdler also managed to bag a two apiece, but Dave had rather selfishly cornered the market. Rumours that the Treasurer is considering introducing a Dave Carey surcharge remain unconfirmed.
Kev Farminer also got in on the action, claiming the money shot on the 1st. More importantly, Kev was the only golfer whose moment of glory was captured on video. So while everyone else will have to rely on increasingly elaborate descriptions of their brilliance, Kev has actual evidence. Expect the footage to be shown at every available opportunity, possibly with a director’s commentary.
Division 1 โ A Battle of the Marks
At the sharp end of Division 1, Mark Hannah produced an excellent 39 points to claim top spot, edging out Mark Amandini on 38. Behind them, Kev Farminer added a podium finish to his nearest-the-pin success, taking third place with 38 points, squeezing past Geoff Gregory on countback. Geoff will no doubt be reviewing his back-nine scorecard and identifying at least six perfectly good opportunities to have done something slightly less daft.
With just one point covering the leading four, it was a fiercely contested division, although Mark Hannah clearly hadn’t received the memo about keeping things interesting right to the very end.
Division 2 โ The Most Expensive Free Lesson in Golf?
Meanwhile, in Division 2, John Johnston demonstrated just how valuable a passing conversation in the clubhouse can be. Having recently picked up a few golfing tips from a fellow member, John promptly put the advice into practice and romped home with a magnificent 40 points, comfortably securing first place.
Clearly, the advice worked wonders, although the generous member responsible might now be regretting giving it away for nothing. With John collecting the honours and the winnings, surely a modest consultancy fee is in order? At the very least, a pint. Word of this remarkable coaching success is already spreading, and members are being advised not to offer John any more free tips until the rest of us have caught up.
Steve Downer produced a very respectable 37 points to take second, while Nick Morgan completed the podium with 35 points. On most Thursdays those would be perfectly decent returns, but John had clearly decided to demonstrate just how much can be achieved with a little friendly advice โ particularly when someone else supplies it free of charge.
Another Fine Thursday at the Lakes
So another Roll-Up goes into the record books, with excellent scoring across both divisions, a lesson that transformed a golfer’s fortunes, and enough twos to keep the Treasurer awake at night.
Congratulations to Mark Hannah and John Johnston on their division wins, to all our podium finishers, and especially to Dave Carey, who may now be in a position to buy the entire clubhouse a drink. John, meanwhile, might consider buying one for his new swing coach!
As for next Thursday, the rest of us will be hoping for a few more putts to drop. Dave, meanwhile, will probably be arriving with a wheelbarrow for his winnings.
